Our Journey So Far

CAF India was set up in 1998 as a registered public charitable trust to encourage and support donors to give in more strategic and structured ways. We have been proactive in introducing new or redesigned practices to keep pace with the dynamic environment. India has a long tradition of philanthropic giving, with all religions promoting the concept of charity. The 1990s saw a steep increase in wealth creation at the hands of a number of new entrepreneurs due to liberalisation. With wealth creation, old patterns of giving began to change. Although many affluent middle class Indians have traditionally given to charity on a formal basis, the commitment to community is no longer their main driver for giving. Executives are increasingly giving to intermediary organisations or to build those that are missing, rather than giving directly to individuals. In fact, according to the World Giving Index 2014, India climbed 24 rankings for generosity, with a global rank of 69.

Over the past 17 years, we have actively engaged with stakeholders across a broad spectrum of areas, as well as developing and refining our system for validating NGOs. We use our expertise and experience to work with over 50 corporations and 32,000 individual donors, providing effective giving to more than 300 validated non-profits across 22 states in India.
