Building awareness and distribution networks

To provide immediate relief we worked closely with out charity partner, GOONJ, to collect and distribute essential supplies to the tsunami ravaged areas.

A tsunami collection campGOONJ initiated several formal and informal collection camps and awareness campaigns across major cities. The collection drives targeted corporations, resident welfare associations, schools, colleges and civil society groups. GOONJ also sought to involve grassroots-level organisations working in remote parts to help make an immediate assessment of the affected areas and identify the nature of material that was required. These grassroots-level organizations and networks were also utilised as distribution mechanisms.

In early January 2005, CAF India trustees set up the Tsunami Rebuilding Lives Fund. Give2Asia approved a grant of US$ 15,000 to CAF India for packaging and shipping of relief material to the tsunami-affected areas. In three months, GOONJ collected and dispatched material worth Rs 10 million (US$ 227,273).
